On the highest hills
of Brunello

Poggio Antico

A 35-hectare (86 acres) vineyard area is cultivated at an altitude of almost 550 meters (1,640 ft). The ancient and mixed soil is made up of calcareous rock and galestro (marl) forcing the Sangiovese grape to bring out its best expression, resulting in complex and elegant wines: the iconic Brunello.

Managing the vineyards to us means precision and constant presence among the rows . Thorough geological research allowed to classify Poggio Antico vineyards in 6 Macro units and 15 Soil Units: these represent the estate’s micro terroirs and are harvested and vinified separately.

Poggio Antico is the soaring home of Brunello: an exclusive experience in the light and colors of the most authentic Tuscany.

Poggio Antico

History

Poggio Antico was founded in 1976, bringing together three historic farms on the southwestern slopes of Montalcino – an area long devoted to agriculture, already recorded in the 18th-century Leopoldine Land Registry. From the very start, its high elevation, natural isolation, and complex soils shaped a clear direction: low-impact farming, strict selection, and a pared-back winemaking style that stays true to the land.

Over the years, Poggio Antico has grown into a respected independent estate, known for its disciplined approach and a restrained, thoughtful winemaking style that stays true to the character of its terroir.

In the early 2000s, the estate began a process of renewal – updating the winery with new technologies, reorganising the vineyard layout, and expanding the range to include two Toscana IGT wines. The arrival of new owner Marcel van Poecke in 2017 marked the beginning of a new phase – focused on development and quality, while staying rooted in the estate’s history.

The New Winery

An ambitious project born from a concrete need: to follow every stage of work – in the vineyard and in the cellar – with greater precision. In recent years, the estate’s approach has evolved. Zoning, soil-unit mapping and separate vinifications now call for more tailored spaces, specific technical tools, and a rational management of timing and process.

Designed by architect Marco Casamonti, the new winery will run entirely on gravity. Built into the landscape, it reflects a vision shaped day by day – a space designed to lighten our touch, improve the way we work, and honour the raw material. Construction will begin in 2026 – stay tuned!
