Poggio Antico 53024 Montalcino (Siena), Italy T: +39 0577-848044 E: mail@poggioantico.com
From the top of the village of Montalcino – from which the surrounding area takes its name – the landscape reveals its full variety. To the south rises the cone-shaped Mount Amiata, an ancient volcano standing 1,700 metres high, shielding the area from Apennine currents and helping to retain the influence of the sea. To the northeast, the hills of the Val d’Orcia appear, dotted with the iconic Crete Senesi that inspired the colour known as “Terra di Siena.”
Montalcino is a quiet, industrious microcosm made up of olive groves, vineyards, and centuries-old woodlands that crown the hilltops. A true “wine mountain,” it has long crowned Sangiovese as its king – Tuscany’s traditional grape, cultivated here since Etruscan times. On these hills, Sangiovese has found its deepest expression, earning the name “Brunello” for its ability to produce noble wines of deep colour, remarkable complexity, and long aging potential.
The estate is divided into four zones: I Poggi, Madre, Le Martine, and Ingresso. It forms a single, contiguous body of 37 hectares of vineyards arranged like a fan around the central winery – all certified 100% organic.
Though the vineyards of Poggio Antico can already be considered a cru in their entirety, they have been further subdivided into four smaller zones, each named after the historic farmstead that once defined the area.
