Soil Units,
Harmony in Complexity

Poggio Antico

Soil analysis has divided the vineyards of Poggio Antico into 6 macro-groups and 15 Soil Units, each representing a distinct micro-terroir within the estate.

This geological diversity offers a beautifully complex range of nuances: even within a single vineyard, the same grape variety can express itself in markedly different ways. These differences give rise to the estate’s Soil Units – 15 micro-terroirs grouped into 6 categories that reflect the “geological symphony” of Poggio Antico.

The Soil Unit system goes beyond the traditional concept of a “vineyard”, dividing the estate’s 37 hectares into sectors with similar soil profiles, even when located in separate plots. Each Soil Unit is a distinct “voice” of Poggio Antico – a singular expression of its terroir.

Poggio Antico

At Poggio Antico, organic farming is a functional choice. It allows us to respond precisely to micro-variations and the specific needs of each vineyard, row by row, vine by vine. It also acts as a regulating force – maintaining balance between the spontaneity of nature and the precision of viticulture, safeguarding soil health and long-term ecological resilience.

  • No synthetic products
  • Use of natural organic fertilisers
  • Grass cover crops to prevent soil erosion
  • Manual vineyard work to avoid soil compaction
  • Use of natural preparations to strengthen the vine
