Harvest has begun at Poggio Antico, following a complex and challenging season that required flexible and careful agronomic assessment.

We asked Pier Giuseppe D’Alessandro, General Manager of Poggio Antico (former Technical Director, in charge of cellar and agronomic management) to tell us about this unique vintage.

How has this year been?

It certainly stood out for its irregular weather patterns: winter was quite dry, while spring was very rainy and often cold. This naturally caused delay in flowering and fruit set, which persisted throughout the season. We experienced numerous intense weather events that have undoubtedly posed serious challenges for anyone working in agriculture. Fortunately, we didn't have any issues with downy mildew at Poggio Antico, and hail caused only minimal damage. We reached the harvest period with slightly lower quantities, a decline that we expected given the plant's natural response to unforeseen circumstances, but grape quality is certainly outstanding.

Which kind of operations were carried out in the vineyard?

As always, we listened to and observed the vineyard, constantly ensuring our presence: we always aim to assist the plant and safeguard its health by putting it in the best possible conditions and allow it to thrive naturally.

We worked extensively among the rows to help the vineyard stay dry, preserving grass cover and using natural products like zeolite, a useful mineral that ensures stable temperatures and humidity level.

We are lucky: Poggio Antico's vineyards are resilient and have responded in accordance with nature, seeking balance and remaining strong and healthy.

Our privileged location has greatly helped us: the high altitude and persistent wind have naturally protected the rows from fungal diseases, which unfortunately widely affected this year's wine season in Italy.

What can we expect from the 2023 vintage?

Nature teaches us to not prematurely jump to conclusions; however, I can say that the initial feedback is very promising. We have worked meticulously and selected the best from our vineyards: I am confident that these wines will have an intriguing and extraordinary character.
