If we were to exclusively judge by the vintage, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018 and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva 2017 would certainly appear to be on opposite sides: 2018 has been a cool season, while 2017 had been hot.
Despite the evident differences and the weather that had been agronomically challenging, our latest vintages are decisively in excellent shape. This proves that resilient vineyards, distinctly suitable plots and the experience gained over the years (also thanks to the parcellation in Units of Soil) allow us to yield exceptionally high quality even during the most challenging vintages.
The balance, finesse and elegance of Brunello di Montalcino Docg 2018, aged for 30 months in wood and 18 in the bottle, stand out. This wine has ably withstood the cold and benefitted from the excellent temperature variation during the harvest period. The development of the grapes was well-balanced, and the fruits reached ideal phenolic concentration. Slightly less powerful than the Riserva version, it unveils a solid classic soul that has the potential to age and evolve for the years to come.
Brunello di Montalcino Docg Riserva 2017 (aged for 30 months in wood and 30 months in the bottle) is the fruit of a hot summer: a vigorous and full-bodied drink that reveals full fruit. A lively wine that has maintained its freshness, thanks to the elevated position of Poggio Antico vineyards on the highest hills of Montalcino. An astonishing vintage for wine lovers.
